There’s an empty wall in our house. It’s waiting for the work of Ron van der Ende or Kevin Cyr.

Chevy- Kevin Cyr

Ron van der Ende constructs woodsculptures in semi-3D. The works are all between 15 and 25 cm deep, the perspective comes to life through the constructed mosaic of small woodpieces. In an interview with Diskursdisko Ron explains how he doesn’t paint the pieces of wood he collects, like old doors and stuff. The image is carefully reconstructed using the original found woodpiece colors. Kevin Cyr’s work focuses on vehicles he has encountered on the streets of Brooklyn, New York, or places he has traveled. However having always been ‘too chicken to be a graffiti artist’, Kevin finds ‘beauty in derelict cars and unkempt landscapes’ (from an interview in My Love For You Is A Stampede Of Horses).

Budget and availability being in the way of actually acquiring one of these pieces, I’ve started to collect images from Kevin Cyr’s grafitti van series and van der Ende’s reliëfs. Today I edited them to the right resolution to put them on the desktop of our media server. So now we’ve got our own swivel-arm art slideshow. I don’t think I’ve ever been so satisfied with a plan B.

I’m a keen follower of lifehacker.com’s desktop feed. I’ve never been able to settle for whatever tools are handed to me, I have to tweak it until it fits. Here’s my current desktop, and the tools I used to create this look.

De Pont | Tilburg

Here’s a set of desktops with the following tools I used in my Vista setup:

Rainmeter
Clocks, system monitors, RSS feeds, weather updates, image slideshows, Rainmeter has got it all. And if you use the HUD white display skin it’s got killer looks too. Getting some tweaks of my own into the ini files I tweaked the threehanded clock display so it fit better in my grid.

RocketDock
The Apple launcher for Windows Vista. RocketDock comes with a large array of settings for behaviour and appearance. I really like the Ecqlipse 2 white icon set. Most of the application icons I wanted in my dock were available from the default set, but I had to make some of them myself.

CD Art Display
Now playing in iTunes, Windows Media, WinAmp or seven other musicplayers. CD Art Display shows title, author, album, time and rating for the current song and functions as a remote control for my iTunes. It even allows rating my songs in iTunes. Configurable shortcut keys make it easy to pop the application to the foreground if I want to rate songs or change volume. Works fine with my Logitech DiNovo Edge multimedia keyboard as well. Not surprisingly I couldn’t resist tweaking graphics and interaction to make it fit better into my Rainmeter desktop layout. Download the featured CD Art Display skin here.

DesktopCHANGER
This systray backgroundtool randomly or scheduledly changes your desktop background image to any set of off- or online pictures you want. The backgrounds featured in these screenshots are photographs I took in several museums around Europe (I like musea, but mostly for the museum itself, not always for the art).

Images
And of course the desktops themselves. Here’s a set for downloading, containing photographs I took in various musea and galleries: download.zip (4MB)

Do you still regret the fact that you missed that Lowlands festival mudfight? Or that one rather obscure but brilliant band on one of the smaller stages? Did you elbow your way to the moshpit, only to find that yesterday Amsterdam’s delights killed the band’s skills? Wouldn’t it be great to know what’s the place to be right now? Enter: the Lowlands Heatmap.

Check your mobile to see how hot stage Alpha, Bravo and Echo are right now. The Lowlands Heatmap shows the visitors’ vote on the performing artists. So when you’re spectacularly underwhelmed by the act you’re watching, vote NOT so that people know they don’t need to come your way. The Lowlands Heatmap is the LIVE guide to the music festival.

Here is Owen van Dijk’s capture of three festival days heatmap:
